The design of everyday [technology] things

NYTimes ArticleSo what will happen with the telephone booths and parking meters of our analog days? An article in the NY Times, online rather than print, discusses this very phenomenon.

As the old technology goes way side, how can we reinvent or reuse this infrastructure. Spain currently has plans underway for converting under-used telephone booths into charging stations for iPods, laptops, and cell phones.

What other “old world” technologies can we repurpose?

Jane Goodall: Hope for Animals and Their World (Grand Central)

Jane Goodall: Hope for Animals and Their World (Grand Central)

There was an inspiring interview this morning on the Diane Rehm’s show on NPR with Jane Goodall. In her new book, she writes about the animals that have been brought back from the brink of extinction. A small robin, the red fox, the California Condor, which she carries a feather from as a reminder.

In her closing comments she reminded listeners the future is unwritten, though the statistics are dis-heartening, don’t give up. Keeping fighting and encouraging our children to fight.

Her new book is Hope for Animals and Their World: How Endangered Species Are Being Rescued from the Brink. Her words this morning have inspired me to start reading this.

Peaches and Greens: Getting fresh veggies to downtown Detroit

Watch the video

Watch the video

In a city where liquor stores out number grocery stores 26:1, one group is making a difference. Locally grown vegetables delivered by truck, like the ice cream truck, to the poor neighborhoods in Detroit. Now children can buy an apple for 50 as the truck drives through the streets. A farmer’s market has been built on a vacant lot. Now the whole community is involved in growing and harvesting vegetables. The program is targeted at eating healthy and lower neighborhood obesity rates, which are some of the highest in the country. Michigan is now funding several other programs in the city!

It's back to school time, and the AIA is going green

As part of our continuing education, the AIA requires registered architects to attend classes yearly. This year, as part of that requirement, they are adding sustainability to the curriculum.

Given the impact of buildings and their energy use on the environment, I think this is a good step in raising awareness. However, until lower carbon emissions and energy useage are implemented as part of our building code, we as design professionals, are the champions of these needed changes.
