In a city where liquor stores out number grocery stores 26:1, one group is making a difference. Locally grown vegetables delivered by truck, like the ice cream truck, to the poor neighborhoods in Detroit. Now children can buy an apple for 50 as the truck drives through the streets. A farmer’s market has been built on a vacant lot. Now the whole community is involved in growing and harvesting vegetables. The program is targeted at eating healthy and lower neighborhood obesity rates, which are some of the highest in the country. Michigan is now funding several other programs in the city!
