Wings in the City!

I just found out I was award one of 49 butterflies for the Wings in the City project. I submitted my design and have been matched with a corporate sponsor to be announced later this week.

I submitted an original design. I feel very strongly about incorporating the children this project benefits, BJC Pediatric Hospice and Palliative Care. All the proceeds from the auction benefit pediatric cancer and the Express Therapy program. My submission using the children’s hands prints to mosaic the piece. I plan to collect the children’s handprints in plaster molds to make positive latex molds. After I finish making the mold I plan to paint each print to accompany the butterfly, so each child and family has a record of being part of the piece. This way even if the child is sick and can not visit the butterfly while it is out on tour in St. Louis, they can look at their piece. If they are better, they can go out and touch their handprint on the butterfly while it is on display.

The body of the butterfly will be created through a glass tile mosaic. This will add texture and 3-d to the piece.
