The design of everyday [technology] things

NYTimes ArticleSo what will happen with the telephone booths and parking meters of our analog days? An article in the NY Times, online rather than print, discusses this very phenomenon.

 

As the old technology goes way side, how can we reinvent or reuse this infrastructure. Spain currently has plans underway for converting under-used telephone booths into charging stations for iPods, laptops, and cell phones.

What other “old world” technologies can we repurpose?

Peaches and Greens: Getting fresh veggies to downtown Detroit

In a city where liquor stores out number grocery stores 26:1, one group is making a difference. Locally grown vegetables delivered by truck, like the ice cream truck, to the poor neighborhoods in Detroit. Now children can buy an apple for 50 as the truck drives through the streets. A farmer’s market has been built on a vacant lot. Now the whole community is involved in growing and harvesting vegetables. The program is targeted at eating healthy and lower neighborhood obesity rates, which are some of the highest in the country. Michigan is now funding several other programs in the city!
